Car Trips with Dogs: anxiety and car sickness tips

It’s Road Trip Season! For dogs who aren’t as comfortable in the car, we have a few tips to make your trip more pleasant for everyone:
1. DESENSITIZE
Start training, now! Or yesterday! You can desensitize your dog to car trips by practicing short trips, or even just tiny steps like walking up to the car, getting a treat, and leaving. Slowly build up your dog's tolerance to the car by making positive associations *before* they are showing signs of stress.
2. HERBAL SUPPORTS
In conjunction with training, you can calm their nervous system with an herbal supplement like Stress Gold from Pet Wellbeing. Their formula is a blend of sedative herbs, stress-regulators, and digestive aid.
3. GET 'EM TIRED
On the morning of your trip, get in a good tiring walk so they’re more likely to relax in the car.
4. SKIP BREAKFAST
Feeding some small treats for training is ok, but you want to keep their tummies pretty empty to minimize nausea (and minimize clean-up if the worst happens 🤢)
5. FRESH AIR IS BEST
While you're driving, crack both back windows for more air flow, fresh air, and improved air pressure in the car.
6. TAKE BREAKS!
Stop for that scenic view, or let your dog out while you're pumping gas. Remember to give them water on these breaks too!
